What is GainsX5?

"Gains by 5" is a simple weight lifting tracker to track lifting improvements over time. It was inspired by the Starting Strength program where each week you increase your lifts by 5 lbs to steadily build strength over time. The name "GainsX5" is a nod to that core principle of consistent, incremental progress.





All in the browser

GainsX5 uses your browser's native database, IndexDB to store your workouts. All your data stays on your device, we do not store your data. As long as you use the same browser, you are good to go. You can export your data in CSV format (Settings > Manage data) and paste it in to your favorite spreadsheet for futher analysys.





My story

My career has been in product and software design and in the past, front-end development (coding for the browser). In 2026, one of my goals was to be able to bench my weight, something I have not done in 20+ years. It seemed unachievable.


I discovered Starting Strength, a simple program comprised of 4-5 different lifts, 3 sets of 5 reps of each, and adding 5 pounds each week. Simple, measurable progress. This is what I needed as previous attempts were aimless and lacked accountability.


I started 2026 benching and in months of consistent lifting (2-3x per week), I was able to double my starting strength and eventually bench my weight. It worked - and faster than I thought.

I looked around for simple tracker apps, but could not find any good and free sites, so I made GainsX5.
